5 DAYS TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA DESERT

This 5-day private desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back offers one of the most complete and immersive experiences in Morocco, ideal for travelers seeking a balance of adventure, culture, and comfort. You’ll journey through the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Benhaddou, and visit Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa. The tour continues through the rose-filled Skoura oasis and Dades Valley, famous for its kasbahs and canyons, before reaching the dramatic Todra Gorge and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. You’ll enjoy sunset camel rides, spend magical nights in Berber desert camps under the stars, and visit nomadic families, fossil museums, and the Gnawa village of Khamlia. The route back includes scenic stops in Telouet, the Ounila Valley, and the Glaoui kasbahs, with final highlights like the Taourirt Kasbah and the majestic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. With expert local guides, handpicked accommodations, and seamless transport, this tour is perfect for those who want to deeply experience the landscapes, traditions, and hospitality that make Morocco unforgettable.

DAY 1: MARRAKECH TO AIT BENHADDOU KASABAH ,THEN OUARZAZATE AND DADES GORGES

Your private driver will pick you up in the morning from your riad or hotel in Marrakech to begin an unforgettable adventure through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters—the highest in Morocco. Along the way, you’ll enjoy several scenic stops for photos, refreshments, and panoramic views of traditional Berber villages perched on the mountainsides. By midday, you'll arrive at the UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou, a stunning fortified village made of clay and stone, famous for its architectural beauty and as a filming location for over 20 international films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. After a guided walk through the kasbah and lunch at a local restaurant, the tour continues to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the "Hollywood of Africa," where you may pass the Atlas Film Studios or stop for photos at the Kasbah Taourirt. From here, the journey proceeds through the Valley of Roses, known for its fragrant blossoms and traditional rosewater cooperatives, before reaching the dramatic Dades Valley, also known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs. You’ll end the day in the stunning Dades Gorges, where you’ll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in a local guesthouse or hotel.

DAY 2: DADES GORGES TO MERZOUGA

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the magnificent Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon with towering rock walls reaching up to 300 meters. You’ll have time to explore the gorge, walk along the river through palm groves, and perhaps see local climbers scaling the cliffs or Berber nomads watering their herds. Continuing the journey, you’ll pass through Tinjdad and Erfoud, the latter known for its fossil workshops and ancient marine formations—optional visits can be arranged. After lunch en route, the tour proceeds to Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, where your camel caravan awaits. As the sun begins to set, embark on a peaceful camel trek through the mesmerizing Sahara dunes. After about an hour of riding, you’ll arrive at a traditional desert camp, where you’ll enjoy tea, a freshly prepared Moroccan dinner, and spend the night in a Berber nomadic-style tent under a sky full of stars, accompanied by local music around the campfire.

DAY 3- MERZOUGA VISIT AND DESERT CAMEL EXCURSION

Today is dedicated to discovering the cultural richness and natural beauty surrounding Merzouga. After breakfast, you’ll visit Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa people, where you'll enjoy their unique spiritual music and learn about their roots from sub-Saharan Africa. Next, continue across the desert to meet semi-nomadic Berber families, where you’ll gain insight into traditional desert life, hospitality, and survival in harsh conditions. You may also visit the seasonal Merzouga Lake, often home to flamingos and other migratory birds. Optional stops include a Berber cooperative where handcrafted items such as carpets and jewelry are sold at better prices than in the big cities. For lunch, enjoy a local specialty known as "Berber pizza", a delicious stuffed flatbread. In the afternoon, return to your hotel or lodge to rest before preparing for your second camel excursion—this time a longer trek through the dunes during golden hour. Afterward, return to camp for dinner, music, and another magical night in the desert.

DAY 4 - MERZOUGA TO OUARZAZATE

After witnessing the incredible sunrise over the dunes, ride your camel back to the camp’s edge and enjoy breakfast and a shower. Then, begin the journey westward back through the desert and mountains. En route, you’ll revisit Aït Benhaddou, this time from a different perspective, and then take a detour into the stunning and less-traveled Ounila Valley, dotted with Berber villages and lush terraced fields. You’ll continue on to Telouet, once a vital stop along ancient trade routes, where you’ll explore the Kasbah of Telouet, the ancestral home of the influential Glaoui family. The kasbah is known for its intricate zellij tilework, painted cedar ceilings, and rich history. Enjoy lunch in Telouet or a nearby mountain village, then continue your scenic drive through mountain roads back toward Ouarzazate, where you'll spend the night in a comfortable hotel.

DAY 5 - OUARZAZATE TO MARRAKECH

After breakfast, enjoy a guided visit of the Kasbah Taourirt—a historic fortress with over 300 rooms, once occupied by the powerful Pasha of Marrakech. Learn about Morocco’s feudal past and the role the kasbah played in Saharan trade. Afterward, begin your return drive to Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains, once again passing through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where you’ll have several scenic stops for photos, café breaks, or optional local encounters. Arrive back in Marrakech by late afternoon or early evening, where your unforgettable desert adventure concludes.
